What to know about Model 270 serial numbers

• A Model 270 made after 1968 carries a B serial number prefix that is shared with the Models 150, 190, 250, 255, 275 and 290. The prefix is not a year code, and no serial number table for the Model 270 has been published. Winchester's own manufacture-date reference has none, and the Cody Firearms Museum holds no Model 270 records.
• Federal law did not require serial numbers on rifles until the Gun Control Act took effect in December 1968. An early example may therefore carry no serial number at all.
• Production ran from 1963 to 1973. The Deluxe, with select wood and a Monte Carlo stock, ran from 1965 to 1973. The 1974 date given by Proofhouse is the date the model was dropped.
• The 270 is the slide-action gun in the 1963 rimfire trio. The Model 250 is the lever-action, the Model 270 is the pump, and the Model 290 is the semi-automatic. A listing that calls a Model 270 a semi-automatic has the model wrong.
