What to know about Super X Model 1 serial numbers

  • There is no table that turns a Super X Model 1 serial number into a year. The Blue Book and the NRA Museum give only the prefixes, M for standard guns and IDU for the Ducks Unlimited edition. oldguns.net and Proofhouse give only the span 1974 to 1981.
  • The Ducks Unlimited prefix is IDU, with a capital letter I, not the numeral 1. The 1976 Ducks Unlimited Gun of the Year is the one edition with a firm date, and 900 12-gauge guns were made. The Mississippi Flyway edition is marked on the receiver as one of 500. A separate MF prefix for it has not been confirmed.
  • Made from 1974 to about 1981. Winchester's timeline introduces it in 1974. oldguns.net and Proofhouse run it to 1981, and American Rifleman notes it left the regular catalog in 1981. An XTR grade was listed separately in the 1981 catalog. Custom Shop trap and skeet guns were built to order into the early 1990s, which the Blue Book puts at 1987 to 1992. No production total has been published.
  • Factory Trap guns came with either a regular or a Monte Carlo stock, so a Monte Carlo stock alone does not identify a Trap gun. Some engraved guns sold as Super Pigeon Grade may be later custom work.
